This is an invitation to members, particularly those living in Far North Queensland, to reserve the date for the rededication ceremony, following the replacement of the 21st Brigade (2/14, 2/16, 2/27 Battalions) memorial plaque at Rocky Creek Memorial Park. The ceremony will take place at 11 am on Sunday, 11 August, 2024. A tour of the World War II historical sites in the area will be undertaken the following morning.
Suggested itinerary:
- Saturday 10 August – arrive on the Tableland and have an informal visit to Rocky Creek War Memorial Park. Stay overnight on the Tableland. Many groups choose Yungaburra (southern end of Tinaroo Dam). There is also accommodation at Atherton and Tinaroo township (northern end of Tinaroo Dam where the 21st Brigade trained during WWII).
- Sunday 11 August – subject to change
- 9-10am – Meet and Greet – for families present for dedication of individual and unit memorial plaque – Facilitated by myself.
- 10 – 10:30am – Unveiling and dedication of individual and unit memorial plaques
- 11am – Rocky Creek memorial service
- 12 noon – memorial service concludes. “Picnic in the Park” to take place where there will be a band playing and a food / coffee van present to finish off the day.
- 2pm – function concludes.
- Your members can then choose to either:
- Return to Cairns and stay there or fly home or
- Return to overnight Tableland accommodation.
- Monday 12 August AM – Tableland WWII History Tour – special morning tour organised for those people attending VP Day that had individual or unit memorial plaques unveiled – Cost of the tour is $60 / head and includes morning tea.
- Monday 12 August PM – Tableland WWII History Tour concludes. People can then choose to either:
- Adjourn to the Tolga Hotel for a $20 lunch special. Then either:
- Return to Cairns and stay there or fly home or
- Return to overnight Tableland accommodation.
